Police responded to the Alburgh Community Learning Center on Champlain Street at 6:56 p.m. for a report of a large fight involving multiple bystanders. It happened during a seventh and eighth grade basketball game between Alburgh and St. Albans. Police said one man, Russell Giroux, 60, of Alburgh, who was involved in the fight, required medical attention. Detectives learned that Mr. Giroux had left school and was driving home when he stopped his car and called first responders. Jiro was taken to Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. He later died in the hospital. Police did not say how Giro was injured in the incident. The Grand Isle Supervisors Union released a statement about the incident Wednesday afternoon. Giroux’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington to determine the cause of death. The cause and manner of death are listed as pending further investigation, including toxicology testing and the ongoing work of the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation assigned to the case.
