Vermont man dies after fight breaks out at middle school basketball game

It happened during a seventh and eighth grade basketball game between Alburgh and St. Albans. Police said one man, Russell Giroux, 60, of Alburgh, who was involved in the fight, required medical attention. Detectives learned that Mr. Giroux had left school and was driving home when he stopped his car and called first responders. Jiro was taken to Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. He later died in the hospital. Police did not say how Giro was injured in the incident. The Grand Isle Supervisors Union released a statement about the incident Wednesday afternoon. Giroux’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington to determine the cause of death. The cause and manner of death are listed as pending further investigation, including toxicology testing and the ongoing work of the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation assigned to the case. This is an active and ongoing investigation. VSP asks that anyone who was involved in the fight or has any information to call them at the St. Albans barracks at 802-524-5993.
