When the defending America’s Cup chose Spain’s Barcelona as its venue, the Kiwi team ignored a well-known maxim: foil boats prefer flat water. The starting point is how rough the Mediterranean waters of the Catalan capital are, and while that’s good for a Cup sailing cycle, it’s a problem for the AC75.
Challenger Alinghi Red Bull Racing is the only team training at this location and while they are a new team learning to sail the monohull, it is no secret that the sea conditions will be a challenge for everyone. Steady sailing is a struggle, and increased loading from hard crashes can wreck boats.
For the New York Yacht Club American Magic, they returned to their winter training site in Pensacola, Florida, which provided smooth water conditions for the 2021 America’s Cup, but the team now heads offshore, looking for the kind of punishment that Barcelona offers.
“When we see Recon come out of Barcelona, we’re very excited to get on board in sea mode and get some swell,” said Terry Hutchinson, President of Sailing Operations and Skipper. “What you’re looking for is really control as the boat goes up and down in the swell.
“You know all the teams are moving in terms of rudder length, foils and things like that, so you really understand how you can handle the boat in a changing swell or a changing bend, because that’s definitely where it’s at. a play will be staged.”
As for the American Magic’s new AC75 for the 37th America’s Cup, Terry reports that the design will be signed in late May and construction will take place inside the team’s facility in Rhode Island.
Following the publication of the AC37 Protocol and the AC75 Class Rule on November 17, 2021, the AC75 Class Rules and AC Technical Regulations will be finalized on March 17, 2022. The entry period opened on December 1, 2021 and runs until July 31, 2022, but late entries for the 37th America’s Cup can be accepted until May 31, 2023. The defender was due to announce the venue on September 17, 2021, but has delayed revealing the venue, confirming it will be Barcelona on March 30, 2022. The 37th America’s Cup will be held in September/October 2024.
