Several school districts in Monterey County have announced that all classes and extracurricular activities will be canceled on Thursday, January 12. The following school districts have announced school closures as of 11:00 p.m. Wednesday: Salinas Union Santa Rita High School District Washington Union School District Soledad Gonzales Unified School District Spreckels Unified School District Spreckels Union School District Announcements will be posted after that the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office issued more evacuation orders in anticipation of flooding along the Salinas River. Potential flooding could shut down roads connecting Salinas and the Monterey Peninsula. The river could flood Highway 68 near River Road, Blanco Road at the river crossing and possibly Highway 1 where the river empties into the ocean near the Marina, officials said. They expect that to begin Thursday afternoon, but it could happen earlier or later in the day depending on how fast the river rises.
