Paul Pelosi attack: Alleged assailant had bag with zip ties, source says

The man who allegedly attacked Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was carrying a bag containing multiple ties and other items at the couple’s San Francisco home, according to a source. event

San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said David DePape, 42, faces attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, theft and other felonies in connection with the Friday morning attack.

CNN previously reported that DePape confronted Pelosi and asked where his wife was, yelling, “Where’s Nancy?”

The new details add more insight into what happened in Friday’s attack, in which DePape also tried to hook Paul Pelosi, two sources told CNN on Friday.

“Where’s Nancy” chants carried images of the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

While police have yet to determine a motive, they believe DePape entered the home on purpose.

Police said DePape entered the home through a back door, and it was unclear if he bypassed any security measures.

Paul Pelosi was able to call 911 at the start of the attack, a law enforcement source and another source familiar with the incident previously said. According to a law enforcement source, he was able to keep the line open and the dispatcher could hear a conversation in the background as he spoke in private, but made it clear he needed help.

San Francisco police entered the home around 2:27 a.m. local time Friday (5:27 a.m. local time) to find Pelosi fighting DePape over a sledgehammer, according to the city’s police chief. Officers arrested DePape before they saw him “violently assault” Pelosi with a hammer and tackled him to the ground.

“The officers, while still outside the doorway, ordered the two to drop the hammer. Mr. DePape immediately wrestled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently attacked him with the hammer, Scott said at a news conference on Friday. “Officers immediately moved in, apprehended the suspect, subdued him, took the hammer from him and took Mr. DePape into custody.”

DePape is expected to be charged Monday with several felonies and arraigned Tuesday, according to San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Nancy Pelosi, said in a statement Friday evening that Pelosi was taken to the hospital after the attack and “underwent successful surgery to repair a fractured skull and severe injuries to her right arm and hands.” Paul Pelosi is expected to make a full recovery.

Nancy Pelosi said in a letter to all members of the US House of Representatives on Saturday that her husband continues to improve following the attack, but that their children and grandchildren are “heartbroken and traumatized”.
