The reverse design of the 2023 American Innovation Ohio $1 coin depicts two strong hands clasped together, the upper arm pulling up the lower arm, representing the support and strength required by both sides on the Underground Railroad. A chain tied to a rustic chain around her lower wrist, bits and pieces suggest the hope of freedom. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “Underground Railroad” and “OHIO”. The design was created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Designer Beth Zaiken and sculpted by United States Mint Artist Stephen Lane.

It also features a stylish gear secret symbol that represents industry and innovation. AIP designer Justin Kunz created the design, which was sculpted by Mint Medallic artist Phoebe Hemphill.
