The year is 1994. You’re kidding SimCity 2000 and you think, man, wouldn’t it be amazing if I could get into the game and walk these streets.

The year is 1997. You’re kidding SimCopter, which says on the box that you can explore the streets of the city you create, but it’s fun and like shit. You dream of a future that seems unattainable.

The year is 2022 and, in the end, you can do it. You can take it SimCity 2000 and if you’re about 30 years old, turn it into a modern video game and walk its streets as if you were born there and go to work. The only catch is that it’s hard to do. And that you’re kidding Minecraftit is not SimCity.

Jernej Gosar, a software developer from Slovenia, is the one to thank for this mod, which reads SimCity 2000 Save the file and recycle it as much as possible Minecraft. “The main reason I decided to create this project is that I think it will be really good”, he tells me. “SimCity 2000 have been one of my favorite sports since I was a child, one day I thought it would be great to go out into the streets and explore them. “

In 2014, gaining enough experience through his education and various IT jobs, he got a job fulfilling this childhood dream. Having just gotten inside MinecraftHe found a few mods where folks worked out ways to import SimCity 2000 down map inside Minecraftbut not the house and the city itself.

“So I decided to do it myself”, he says. “If I remember correctly, the main idea was put in place in a few weeks. I was lucky that who wrote a detailed description of the SimCity 2000 file systemotherwise, this project cannot begin.”

He says, “The biggest challenge is mining the bytes of the second file and finally creating something that can be opened in Minecraft”, he says. Another big obstacle was just how long it took change things house, as even the simplest ones can take hours, although with the added bonus that because this is a first-passenger, Gosar’s work increases interior (and sometimes even the main furniture) and – Go to the house from the outside.

He says, “I don’t have all the houses, and doing the hard things (like Arcologies) will be a big effort”. “In general, the smallest houses take only a few hours to complete, including some furniture in the house that makes sense for that type of house. And the largest ones can take a few days .The most complicated building I have done so far is a large office building which is a huge effort.

Although the operation of the mod is very complicated – Gosar says “at this point, it’s nothing for non-software developers” – when you break it down, what it does in principle is easy. It takes a SimCity 2000 map and match each pixel to a Minecraft block. That helps the mod communicate between the two games, and also helps keep everything up to date.

That’s not to say that the conversion process is always smooth sailing. In addition to the complex issues above, Gosar says “in some cases I see 2D buildings that cannot be reproduced in 3D”, one example is that some buildings are real. A diagram like a Penrose staircase instead of a functional 3D space.

“Another problem is that Minecraft is only 256 blocks in height, so if there are many hills in the city, the highest part can be cut “, he adds. “Otherwise, the accuracy should be close to 100 %, and gives it Minecraft the world and the tool that creates the isometric representation should show something close to the original from SimCity 2000

This is an example. The picture below is a SimCity 2000 The great city built by Gosar:

And here is the same city, translated into it Minecraft and walk in full measure. Notice how it manages the small trees and bushes in front of some houses:

Mine City 2000

Although this video highlights some of the main features that the mod brings to certain game rooms:

Going forward, Gosar says that he would like to “make the work more usable”, bringing the tree down so that people can use and understand it, especially in ‘type of online application that will allow users to upload SimCity 2000 save if he gives a Minecraft world and return.

At the moment, although he has a busy day job to attend to, he “doesn’t have time to work on it much, but I think the recent attention that the project has received is a good motivation to move it to “face”. If you are brave and want to try it yourself, you can see the work here.
